Thousands expected in Old Mesilla for Dia de los Muertos Celebration

By Stephany Trego

Las Cruces, NM – Dia de los Muertos, or “day of the dead” is a holiday held to honor and remember loved ones that have passed. Tradition holds that during this celebration, the souls of the dead return to earth to visit their living relatives.

This annual event will be celebrated on the historic plaza in Old Mesilla November 1st through the 2nd. On Saturday, the events will last from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On Saturday at 10 a.m. the assembling and displaying of altar memorials will begin, followed by a piñata breaking at 3 p.m. and a costume contest at 4 p.m. On Sunday at 6 p.m. a luminaria procession will take place. Live latino jazz will be provided throught the day.

This holiday takes the often fearful and sad outlook on death and transforms it into a joyful celebration of the lives their loved ones lived, with dancing, costumes, drinks, and music

Preciliana Sandoval, coordinator for the event said an attendant from last year called the celebration “the best festival locally and their favorite to go to every year.”

Admission for the event is free. For more information contact Preciliana Sandoval at (575) 647-2639.
